The envelope arrives, the language is careful, and somewhere in the third paragraph is a year of free credit monitoring. Most people either ignore it or sign up for the monitoring and consider the matter handled.
Monitoring tells you after somebody opens an account in your name. A credit freeze stops them opening it. Those are not two versions of the same thing, and only one of them is free forever, takes ten minutes and is the actual control.

You Don’t Need to Be Wealthy—or Accredited—to Invest
For $1,001, you can purchase approximately 910 shares of Green Coffee Company at the current offering price of $1.10 per share.
What does that give you exposure to?
45 Colombian coffee farms, consolidated together into the #1 largest producer in the country.
Around 10 million coffee trees.
Proprietary processing facilities capable of handling more than one million pounds per week.
A business that grew revenue from $1 million in 2021 to $26 million in 2025.
Products that have already reached more than 3,000 retail locations.
And exclusive third-party rights involving Juan Valdez roasted-coffee products across U.S. and Canadian retail and institutional channels.
This is not an investment in a café concept hoping to open its first location.
It is an opportunity to own shares in a vertically integrated coffee company already growing, processing, roasting and distributing Colombian coffee at scale.
Green Coffee Company is working to capture value across the supply chain—from the farm where the coffee is grown to the shelf where the finished product is sold.
Until recently, investments like this were often reserved for venture funds and wealthy accredited investors.
Today, individual investors can participate.
No accreditation is required, and the minimum investment is $1,001.
The company is still private, so liquidity is limited and returns are never guaranteed. But for investors who understand the risks, this is a chance to gain early exposure to an established coffee operation before a potential future liquidity event.

Look Behind the Curtain
A freeze blocks access to your credit file. Lenders generally will not extend credit without pulling a report, so if the file cannot be pulled, the account does not get opened. Since a 2018 federal law, placing and lifting one is free at all three nationwide bureaus, it never expires on its own, and it has no effect on your credit score.
The mechanics people get wrong are worth stating plainly. You must do it separately at Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, because a freeze at one does nothing at the others. By law a bureau must place the freeze within one business day of an online or phone request, and lift it within one hour. That last number removes the usual objection: lifting a freeze to apply for a mortgage is a matter of minutes.
A fraud alert is the lighter tool and is often confused with it. It does not block anything; it tells lenders to take extra steps to verify identity. You only contact one bureau and it must tell the other two. The standard version lasts a year; an extended seven-year version requires an identity theft report.
Three bureaus is the usual advice, and there are others. ChexSystems screens checking account applications. The National Consumer Telecom and Utilities Exchange handles phone, cable and utility connections. Innovis is a fourth credit file. All accept freeze requests, and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau publishes the list of who will.
As for scale: the Identity Theft Resource Center counted 3,322 US data compromises in 2025, a record and up five percent, with the number of people notified falling sharply because the year lacked a single enormous breach. More incidents, each smaller. That is the pattern that produces a steady trickle of letters rather than one memorable disaster.
The Capability Multiplier
The leverage is that a freeze is permanent, free and largely invisible, so it converts an open-ended risk into a closed one and then stops requiring attention.
Everything else in the standard advice is maintenance. Check statements, change passwords, watch for strange mail. All sensible, all dependent on you keeping it up for years, all easy to let slide. The freeze keeps working whether or not you remember it exists, which is the only property that survives contact with real life.
It also answers a question the letter does not. A breach notice tells you data was exposed; it rarely tells you what that data can be used for. An exposed password is a password problem, fixed by changing it there and anywhere you reused it. Exposed card details are a bank problem, fixed with one phone call. An exposed Social Security number is the one that enables new accounts in your name, and the freeze is the specific control for that specific harm.
Take the free monitoring too. The FTC's position is that you should, and it costs nothing. Just do not mistake it for protection. It is a smoke detector, not a lock.
The last piece is knowing what comes next. The follow-on to a breach is often not fraud but a phone call from somebody using the breach as a pretext. The FBI logged over five thousand complaints and more than two hundred and sixty million dollars in losses from people impersonating bank support since the start of 2025.
The Sovereign Action
Ninety minutes, once, for the whole household.
- Freeze your credit at Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. It is free, permanent, does not affect your score, and lifts in under an hour when you need credit.
- Freeze your children's and any elderly relative's files too. Those are the ones nobody checks for years.
- Consider ChexSystems, NCTUE and Innovis as well. The CFPB publishes the list of who will freeze.
- Accept the free monitoring in the letter, and treat it as detection rather than prevention.
- Change the password at the breached company and anywhere you reused it, turn on two-factor authentication, and hang up on anyone who calls about it.
