Last October the whole country heard that Windows 10 was ending. This week a second deadline passed with no announcement at all, and it caught Windows 11 machines.

On October 13 Microsoft shipped the final security update for Windows 11 version 24H2, Home and Pro. The company's own notice is blunt about what follows: devices running those editions will no longer receive monthly security updates. The machine still boots. Nothing on screen will tell you.

## Look Behind the Curtain

Windows 11 is not one product with one expiry date. Each annual version has its own support window, usually about two years for Home and Pro, and when that window closes the patches stop for that version only.

The current table reads like this. Version 24H2, released in October 2024, ended for Home and Pro on October 14, 2026\. Version 25H2 runs to October 2027\. Version 26H2, released at the end of September, runs to October 2028\. The same 24H2 release stays supported until October 2027 on Enterprise and Education editions, which is why a reader with a work laptop may hear that everything is fine while their home machine is not.

Here is the part that separates this from last year's Windows 10 story, and it is good news. There is no paid extension to buy, because none is needed. Microsoft's extended security update program covers Windows 10 and two server products. Windows 11 is not on that list and never has been, for the simple reason that the fix is free: install the next version of Windows 11 on the same PC. Nobody is stranded, and nobody should be paying anyone to solve this.

Most Home machines never reach the cliff at all. Microsoft notes that Home edition cannot defer feature updates, so it normally receives the newer version before the deadline arrives. The ones that get caught are the machines that were switched off for months, the ones where someone paused updates to stop a reboot and never unpaused, and the ones sitting on metered connections.

A second deadline landed the same day and will hit more households than the first. Support for Office 2021 ended on October 13, with Microsoft stating plainly that there is no extension and no extended security updates. That covers the boxed, buy-it-once Office Home and Student 2021 and Office Home and Business 2021 that millions of people bought precisely so they would never pay again. The apps, in Microsoft's careful wording, may continue to function. What stops is security fixes.

### The Capability Multiplier

The leverage is in knowing that "supported" is a property of a version, not of a product, and in being able to check it in under a minute.

Open Settings, then System, then About, and read the version line under Windows specifications. If it says 24H2, you are on the version that stopped. Then open Settings and Windows Update and choose Check for updates. On most machines the newer version is offered right there. If it is not, Microsoft publishes an update assistant that installs it manually. The whole job is one restart, and your files, programs and settings stay where they are.

Office is the harder call because there is no free move. Your 2021 apps will open tomorrow and the day after. The exposure is slow rather than sudden: a flaw found next spring in the way Word parses a document never gets fixed, and the thing that arrives as an email attachment is the thing that exploits it. If you mostly open and print your own files, the risk is modest. If you open documents other people send you, it is not.

### The Sovereign Action

Fifteen minutes, on the machine itself.

- Check your version first: Settings, System, About. Anything reading 24H2 on Home or Pro is out of support as of this week.
- Run Settings, Windows Update, Check for updates and accept the newer version. There is nothing to buy and no third party to call.
- If updates were paused at some point, unpause them. That is the single most common reason a machine ends up stranded.
- Treat an unsupported Office 2021 as a document-handling risk, not a dead program. Be careful with attachments from outside, and plan the replacement on your own schedule.
- Put a yearly reminder in the calendar to check the Windows version line. Each new version buys you about two more years.
