What do you call it? --- ### Look Behind the Curtain There are two versions of this. In a SIM swap, someone contacts your carrier claiming to be you with a lost or broken phone and asks for your number to be activated on a new SIM. In a port-out, they claim to be you switching to a different carrier entirely. Both are ordinary customer service transactions that carriers perform thousands of times a day for legitimate reasons. What makes them work is that the verification is usually knowledge, not proof. Your date of birth, your address, the last four of a card, your mother's maiden name: exactly the assortment sold by data brokers and leaked in breaches. The attacker is not defeating security. They are passing an identity check built for a world where that information was hard to find. Regulators noticed. The Federal Communications Commission adopted rules requiring wireless carriers to use secure methods of authenticating a customer before transferring a number to a new device or a new carrier, and to notify customers immediately when such a request is made. Those rules raised the floor, and social engineering of carrier staff has not stopped. The order of events matters more than the technique. Once the number moves, the attacker runs password resets on your email first, because email is what everything else recovers through. Bank and brokerage accounts come next. The whole sequence can run in under an hour, usually overnight, which is why the missing signal often is not noticed until morning. The defense follows directly from the mechanism. Make the transfer require something an attacker cannot look up, and make your important accounts stop depending on text messages. ### The Capability Multiplier The leverage here is unusually concentrated. Two settings changes, each taking a few minutes, remove almost all of the exposure, and neither costs anything or makes your daily life harder. The first is a carrier-level lock. Every major US carrier now offers a number transfer lock or port freeze plus a separate account PIN, and once set, the number cannot be moved until you unlock it yourself. This is the single highest-return security setting most people have never opened, because it defends the key that unlocks everything else. The second is moving your important accounts off text-message codes onto an authenticator app or a passkey. A code generated on your own device is not affected by who controls your phone number, which breaks the entire chain even if a transfer somehow succeeds. Email first, then anything holding money. There is also a detection benefit. Because the attack begins with your phone losing service, knowing that this is a possible cause turns a confusing evening into a specific action: call the carrier from another phone immediately rather than waiting until morning to visit a store. The first hour is where the damage is decided. ### The Sovereign Action This is a one-evening job with a permanent effect, and it is worth doing for every adult in the household. \- Call your carrier or open the account app and turn on the number transfer lock or port freeze, and set an account PIN that is not your birthday or address. \- Move two-factor authentication for email, banking and brokerage accounts from text messages to an authenticator app or a passkey. \- Secure the email account first and hardest.
