For most of this year the advice about Windows 10 has been that the last safety net runs out in October 2026\. Buy a new computer, or accept an unpatched machine. A great deal of the writing still online says exactly that.

It is no longer true. Microsoft's own pages now say the consumer extended security program runs through October 2027, a year longer than the original date, with no announcement and no notification to anyone already enrolled. The deadline simply changed on the website.

### Look Behind the Curtain

The sequence is worth laying out because the vocabulary confuses people. Windows 10 reached end of support in October 2025\. That was the real cliff: no more routine security patches. What Microsoft offered instead was Extended Security Updates, a bridge home users could get three ways, the cheapest of them free.

Route one is turning on Windows Backup to sync your PC settings to your Microsoft account. Route two is spending a thousand Microsoft Rewards points. Route three is a one-time payment of thirty dollars covering up to ten devices. All three need a Microsoft account, an administrator login and Windows 10 version 22H2\. Anyone already enrolled is carried through to the new date automatically.

What that buys is narrow, and the narrowness is the point. ESU delivers security updates rated critical and important and nothing else: no feature updates, no fixes for things merely broken, no technical support.

Businesses are on a different track and should not assume the consumer price applies. The commercial program runs up to three years from end of support, starts at sixty-one dollars per device and doubles each year after. That escalation is deliberate, designed to make replacement look cheaper every year, and by year three it does.

Two more dates run past the consumer deadline. Microsoft Edge and its WebView2 runtime are committed to updates on Windows 10 22H2 until at least October 2028, and Microsoft 365 apps get security updates through that year as well. So a Windows 10 machine after 2027 is not one with an unpatched browser. It is one with an unpatched operating system underneath a patched browser, which is different and still bad.

By StatCounter's measurement in August 2026, Windows 10 still accounted for roughly three in ten Windows desktops worldwide.

### The Capability Multiplier

What the extra year delivers is the ability to replace hardware on your schedule rather than a vendor's. That is the entire value, and it is worth real money to a household with three machines or a business with fifteen.

The reason this became an issue is Windows 11's hardware floor: a 64-bit processor on Microsoft's supported list, UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability, and a TPM 2.0 security chip. Plenty of fast machines fail on the TPM requirement alone, which is why this cycle stranded hardware previous ones would have carried. Microsoft's guidance for a PC that does not qualify is to enroll in ESU or replace it, and it is worth checking whether yours actually fails: some have a TPM disabled in firmware and pass once it is switched on.

The planning advantage of a year is that it converts an emergency purchase into a staged one. Work out which machines genuinely cannot run Windows 11 and replace them in order of how much damage their failure would cause.

There is also a third option people forget. A machine used for browsing, email and documents does not need Windows at all. A current Linux distribution or ChromeOS Flex will run on hardware Windows 11 rejects and stay supported for years, which for a second computer in the house is a reasonable answer.

### The Sovereign Action

An afternoon of inventory buys back a year of calm.

\- Check each Windows 10 machine's enrollment. If it is not enrolled, do it now by the free route: turn on Windows Backup settings sync. Enrollment carries through to October 2027.

\- Confirm the version is 22H2\. Older Windows 10 builds are not eligible for ESU at all.

\- Run the PC Health Check to see which machines can take Windows 11, and check firmware for a TPM that is present but switched off before writing one off.

\- Do not use the consumer route for business machines. Price the commercial program against replacement, and note the cost doubles every year you delay.

\- Remember what ESU is not. Security patches only, no support and no fixes, and the new date is a hard stop rather than another extension to count on.
