In September Apple shipped the rebuilt Siri, and the selling point is personal context: an assistant that can draw on what is already in your messages, your mail and your photos, act inside apps, and see what is on your screen.

That is a different relationship with a phone than most people agreed to. It is also, unusually, documented in detail by the company itself, including the parts that cost money later and the switches that turn pieces of it off.

## Look Behind the Curtain

Start with where the thinking happens, because that is the question underneath all the others. Apple says the new models run on device and on servers using Private Cloud Compute, and that when Private Cloud Compute handles a request, the personal data in it is not stored nor made accessible to Apple or anyone else, with outside experts able to verify that claim. Some pieces are stated as fully local: the component that searches your own index of files and apps works entirely on device.

What Apple does not publish is which requests go which way. There is no list, no indicator, no setting that keeps everything local. If that distinction matters to you, the honest summary is that some of it leaves the phone and you cannot tell which.

On the Google question, read Apple's sentence rather than the headlines. Apple says the capabilities are powered by Apple Foundation Models "custom-built in collaboration with Google and its Gemini models." That describes how the models were built. Apple does not say Google processes your requests, and no Apple document says your data goes to Google.

Two practical limits are worth knowing. The features need an iPhone 16 or later, or an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max, and the most capable on-device model needs newer hardware still. The server-backed features carry daily usage limits that Apple says vary by feature, request complexity and system demand, with expanded access available for a fee in the future. The free tier of your phone's assistant is a tier.

It is also not everywhere: not in the European Union on iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch, not in China, and not for accounts under thirteen.

### The Capability Multiplier

The leverage is that Apple documents the controls individually, which means you can keep what you want and switch off what you do not. There is no single master toggle in this release, and looking for one is why people conclude there is no off switch.

The one setting worth deciding deliberately is in Settings, then Privacy and Security, then Analytics and Improvements. The toggle is named Improve Siri and Apple Intelligence. Turning it on means agreeing to let Apple store and review samples of your Siri, dictation and translation interactions, including audio and transcripts, and Apple states that with this setting on it can also use that data to train foundation models. Apple says the samples are tied to a random device identifier rather than your account, that only Apple employees review audio, and that the history is never sold. It is opt-in, and it is offered during setup when most people are tapping Continue.

Everything else is per feature. Siri itself turns off under Settings and Siri, and the same screen lets you turn it back on as Siri Classic, the older assistant without the new capabilities. Message summaries, mail summaries, notification summaries, prioritized notifications, smart replies and voicemail suggestions each have their own switch. For a firmer line, Screen Time's content and privacy restrictions can block Siri outright, force Siri Classic, or allow the new Siri with individual capabilities turned off.

### The Sovereign Action

Twenty minutes, once, on your own terms.

- Open Settings, Privacy and Security, Analytics and Improvements and look at Improve Siri and Apple Intelligence. Decide it on purpose, knowing that with it on Apple may use those samples to train its models.
- If you want the old assistant back, Settings and Siri will turn Siri off, and turning it on again offers Siri Classic as a choice.
- Switch off summaries one at a time rather than hunting for a master control. Messages, Mail and Notifications each have their own.
- Use Screen Time's restrictions if you want the choice to stay made, on your own device or a family member's.
- Remember the daily limits and the stated future fee before you build a habit on a server-backed feature.
