Type your own name into a search engine and you will usually find a page offering your age, your current and former addresses, your relatives, and a phone number that still works. Nobody at that company ever met you. They bought the pieces, stitched them together, and put a price on the result.

Until recently the only remedy was to opt out of each of those companies one at a time, hundreds of separate forms, most of them designed to be tedious. As of the start of August, Californians have a different option: one request that every registered data broker in the state is now legally required to honor.

### Look Behind the Curtain

Data brokers do not hack anything. They assemble. Property records, voter files, court filings, warranty cards, loyalty programs, app permissions and purchased marketing lists get matched into a profile keyed to your name and address, then sold to advertisers, background-check sites, insurers and anyone else willing to pay. The profile is often wrong in small ways and right in the ways that matter.

That matters for fraud specifically, because a convincing scam call is built from exactly this material. Knowing your address, your daughter's name, your former employer and your neighborhood is what turns a generic script into a call that sounds like it came from your bank. The broker economy is the supply chain behind the impersonation.

California's response is a platform called DROP, run by the state privacy agency under a law requiring data brokers to register. A resident signs up, verifies residency, and submits one deletion request. Registered brokers, of which there are more than six hundred, are required to check the platform and process those requests, and they had to begin doing so on the first of August. Enrollment passed three hundred thousand people before the obligation even took effect, and the agency has already fined companies that failed to register at all.

Two honest limits. The platform covers California residents, and it reaches brokers who registered as required, not the ones operating quietly outside the rules. It is a large lever, not a complete one.

### The Capability Multiplier

The gain is time, which is the resource these companies have always relied on you not having. The opt-out process was never technically difficult. It was deliberately expensive in attention: different forms, different verification steps, different waiting periods, repeated every few months because profiles rebuild. Collapsing that into one request changes the economics of your own privacy.

For everyone outside California, the leverage is different but real. Four states now maintain public registries of data brokers, which means the list of companies holding your information is no longer a mystery you have to reconstruct. You can work from a published roster, start with the ones that feed people-search sites, and stop guessing.

The broader point is that the exposure is not permanent and it is not your fault. It accumulated through ordinary transactions, and it can be reduced through ordinary, boring maintenance. Removing the raw material makes the scam calls less specific, and a less specific scam call is far easier for anyone in your family to recognize.

### The Sovereign Action

Set aside one afternoon, then a short check-in twice a year. This is maintenance, not a one-time fix.

\- If you live in California, submit a request through the state's DROP platform at the privacy agency's site, verify your residency, and save the tracking identifier it gives you.

\- Everywhere else, start with the public data broker registries maintained by California, Oregon, Texas and Vermont, and work through the largest people-search sites first. They feed the smaller ones.

\- Search your own name, and your spouse's and parents' names, and write down which sites return a listing. That list is your actual work queue.

\- Freeze your credit at all three bureaus while you are at it. It is free, it takes minutes, and it blocks the most damaging use of the same data.

\- Put a reminder six months out to search again. Profiles get rebuilt from fresh public records, and a deletion that is never repeated quietly expires.
