Pick up a smart thermostat, a video doorbell, or a baby monitor at the store this year, and you might notice a small shield-shaped logo on the box you haven't seen before. It's not marketing fluff. It's a government-backed label telling you, before you buy, whether that device meets a baseline security standard and what it actually does with your data.

The label is called the Cyber Trust Mark, an FCC program rolling out through 2026 that certifies connected devices against a set of security requirements: things like unique default passwords instead of factory settings shared across every unit, regular software security updates, and clearer disclosure of what data a device collects and where it goes. Each certified product carries a scannable QR code that links to a label with those details in plain language, rather than burying them in a lengthy terms-of-service document nobody reads.  
  
This program exists because the current state of smart home data collection is genuinely murky. Independent research on connected devices has found that a large majority collect behavioral data about how and when you use them, and a significant share transmit that data to manufacturer or third-party servers, sometimes without a clear, upfront disclosure to the buyer. A camera that watches your front door, a thermostat that tracks when you're home, or a speaker that's always listening for a wake word all generate a stream of data whose destination isn't obvious just by looking at the product.

### The Capability Multiplier

The advantage of a program like this is that it turns an invisible decision into a visible one, at the exact moment it matters: before you hand over money and plug the device into your network. Instead of researching a manufacturer's security history or parsing a privacy policy after the fact, you can compare two products at the shelf and immediately see which one meets a baseline you can verify.  
  
This also shifts leverage toward you in a market that has, until now, rewarded whichever device was cheapest or had the flashiest feature list, security and data practices included or not. Consumer research backs this shift: a large share of smart home buyers say they'd switch brands entirely if a competing product offered clearly better privacy or security, which means manufacturers now have a real incentive to earn the label rather than quietly cut corners.  
  
For a small business installing smart locks, cameras, or thermostats across an office or storefront, the same label becomes a fast way to evaluate vendor options without needing an in-house security expert to audit every device individually.  
  
It also gives a business owner something concrete to point to when a client or landlord asks how seriously security was considered in an installation, rather than relying on a verbal assurance that a vendor "takes privacy seriously.".

\- Look for the Cyber Trust Mark shield logo on smart home packaging before buying a connected device, and scan the QR code to see the actual data and security disclosure.  
\- For devices you already own, check the manufacturer's site for their current security update policy and whether the device's default password has ever been changed from the factory setting.  
\- Change any factory-default password on existing smart devices immediately, since a shared default password across every unit of a product is one of the most common entry points for intrusion.  
\- Review each device's data settings for options to limit cloud storage or opt out of data sharing where the manufacturer allows it.  
\- For a growing number of device categories, consider a local-only or on-device processing option instead of one that requires constant cloud connectivity, since it removes an entire transmission path for your data.
